Francesca Menchelli-Buttini was educated in Pisa and Oxford, where she obtained a PhD in Music History under the supervision of Reinhard Strohm. Since 2009 she has taught at Conservatoires in the Chair of Music History, and since 2019 she has held a permanent professorship in the field. From 2002 to 2009 she was a contract lecturer at the University of Pisa in Musicology and Music History, and she contributed to National Research Projects (PRIN) concerning Italian libretto studies. Her research focuses primarily on eighteenth-century opera, with particular attention to Pietro Metastasio\u2019s dramatic texts in their various musical settings, and to the works of Alessandro Scarlatti (with the monograph Sulle opere di Alessandro Scarlatti dopo il 1702, Rome, Neoclassica, 2023), Leonardo Leo, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, and Niccol\u00f2 Jommelli. She also works on the Venetian operatic context between 1730 and 1745 (especially Johann Adolf Hasse, Antonio Vivaldi, and Geminiano Giacomelli), as well as the theatre of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Luigi Cherubini. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences in Italy and abroad. Her scholarly activity includes the editing of volumes and critical editions (three published in the series Drammaturgia musicale veneta of the Istituto Vivaldi for the Fondazione Cini in Venice, including Demetrio by Metastasio\u2013Hasse in collaboration with Reinhard Strohm), as well as articles and essays in books, conference proceedings, and journals (Fonti musicali italiane, Rivista Italiana di Musicologia, Studi musicali, Studi vivaldiani) of national and international relevance. She is currently preparing two critical editions: Adriano in Siria (Livorno 1782) by Cherubini (Berlin, Simrock\/Boosey & Hawkes), under the responsibility of the International Cherubini Society (revived in its first modern performance in Livorno, on 30-31 May 2026 conducted by Federico Maria Sardelli and directed by Chiara Muti), and Achille in Sciro (Rome 1771) by Jommelli (Pisa, ETS), within a series dedicated to the composer.She participates in the international project WoVen: Women, Opera and the Public Stage in Eighteenth-Century Venice, directed by Melania Bucciarelli (University of Trondheim) and funded by the Research Council of Norway for the period 2021\u20132026 (https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/music\/woven), with contributions on the roles performed by Vittoria Tesi on Venetian stages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
