Mauro Bellagamba, born in Ferrara in 1962, began studying piano at the age of 5 with Elettra Finotti Bolognesi, later continuing with Franca Fogli, Gualtiero Caprioglio, and Giampiero Semeraro, under whose guidance he graduated in 1982 with top marks and honours from the Frescobaldi Conservatoire of Ferrara. He attended composition courses as an auditor with Aldo Clementi (Siena), Franco Donatoni (Pescara), and Salvatore Sciarrino (Citt\u00e0 di Castello). At the age of 10 he won second prize in his category at the \u201cCitt\u00e0 di Osimo\u201d piano competition. He founded and directed the instrumental ensemble \u201cAvanguardiaottanta\u201d, with which he recorded for Radio Uno Giulio Castagnoli\u2019s composition Bestiario, winner of the Valentino Bucchi Prize. He worked as r\u00e9p\u00e9titeur for the women\u2019s choir \u201cL. Luzzaschi\u201d of Ferrara conducted by Giordano Tunioli, and also participated, again as r\u00e9p\u00e9titeur for the women\u2019s section of the choir, in a production of Rossini\u2019s Il Barbiere di Siviglia with the Chamber Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado in Ferrara. He passed national competitive examinations for teaching posts in lower and upper secondary schools (Music Education) and for Italian Conservatoires (Score Reading and Chamber Music). Since 1983 he has been teaching in Conservatoires. Over the years his activity has focused on the study of 20th-century music production, and in particular the avant-garde. He has analysed scores by Bart\u00f3k, Berio, Carter, Aldo Clementi, Dallapiccola, Debussy, Donatoni, Hindemith, Ives, Kagel, Ligeti, Messiaen, Nancarrow, Nono, Pousseur, Reich, Schoenberg, Sciarrino, Skrjabin, Stockhausen, Stravinsky, Webern, and Xenakis. He has deepened various aspects of Stravinsky\u2019s output, including the serial period (1951\u20131961), the heterophony of ostinati and oscillating harmonies in the \u201cfauve\u201d and neoclassical periods, as well as the analysis of canons and fugues. He has also carried out systematic work on Messiaen\u2019s production in the central period (1935\u20131951) and Webern\u2019s dodecaphonic period (1924\u20131934).
