Raffaele Coppola, known as Elio Coppola, is a jazz drummer and internationally active teacher. He began studying drums at the age of 12 and trained with leading figures of the African American tradition, including Jimmy Cobb, Bobby Durham, and Kenny Washington, with whom he continued to refine his skills in New York. Over the course of his career he has collaborated with major figures on the international jazz scene, including Benny Golson, Joey DeFrancesco, John Patitucci, Gerald Cannon, David Kikoski, Enrico Rava, Stefano Di Battista and Emmet Cohen. He regularly performs in leading international jazz clubs such as Ronnie Scott\u2019s Jazz Club (London), Birdland Jazz Club and Smalls Jazz Club (New York), Duc des Lombards (Paris) and Blue Note Milan. He also maintains an extensive international festival activity, appearing at events such as the Swansea Jazz Festival (Wales), Italian Jazz Festival (New York), Hamar Jazz Festival (Norway), Zadar Jazz & Blues Festival (Croatia), Dazz Jazz Festival (Spain), as well as the Gouvy Jazz & Blues Festival (Belgium) and the Vesa Jazz Festival (Albania). In Italy he has performed at major festivals including Umbria Jazz, Torino Jazz Festival and Sicilia Jazz Festival. He is the winner of several international jazz competitions, including the \u201cJimmy Woode European Jazz Award\u201d. Alongside his performance career he has been continuously engaged in cultural programming, serving since 2011 as artistic director of Jazz Inn Capri. He is also active in higher music education, having taught jazz ensemble at the Conservatoires of Campobasso, Trapani and Cosenza, and jazz drums at the Conservatoires of Parma, Trento and Campobasso. His teaching practice focuses on the integration of tradition and contemporary languages, with particular attention to ensemble skills, stylistic awareness and the development of individual musical identity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
